Surja Tjahaja leads weekly online Mindfulness Meditation classes for Beginners through the Lake Oswego Parks and Recreation Department. Classes are open to people of all abilities and health conditions. Newcomers are always welcome. No prior experience is necessary for the Beginners Class.
Since we are in the midst of a tripledemic this season, all classes continue to take place in the virtual realm via Zoom. No need to travel to get to class. Simply log in from the comfort of your home after registering. Each course covers a specific syllabus. The different levels of Mindfulness Meditation classes follow a sequence that scaffolds upon each other. Class levels should be taken sequentially so that students can integrate and draw upon their prior learning. The recommended sequence is

TuesdayTitle: Sutra Study -- Level 4
Description: This ongoing seminar, for people who are experienced Mindfulness Meditation practitioners seeking enlightenment and happiness, delves into the root scriptures of Mindfulness sutra literature, particularly the continued study of Majjhima Nikaya. Our deep discussions about the stanzas place emphasis on ego management. Time: 7 - 8:30 PM January 10 - March 28 Cost: Free or dana offering* *Suggested course fee of $120. We encourage students to practice Dana, the Buddhist practice of generosity that values the interdependency between teacher and those who benefit from the teachings. The practice of giving with a generous heart opens your feeling of inner joy, cultivates a spirit of caring and helps you gain insight into the nature of inter-connectedness that we share in this earthly life. Description: This new course is designed to bring pragmatism to the practice of Mindfulness by reading works in the field of neuroscience from such groundbreaking authors as Nobel Prize laureate Eric R. Kandel, Antonio Damasio, Christof Koch, Jaak Panksepp, Norman Doidge and Jill Bolte Taylor. The aim is twofold: (1) to understand how we actually receive information and process it internally and (2) to find out what we can and cannot do. This enables us to respond realistically as we strive toward happiness. Open to those familiar with the fundamentals of Mindfulness Meditation and are willing to challenge their minds in new ways. It is also a positive way to manage pain, boost the immune system and improve brain connections. Continuity and practice are important to nurture new mind/body skills that you can apply to real life situations. With this course, you’ll develop skills for regulating emotions, understanding the process of thought, body scanning, managing life challenges, and cultivating happiness. Description: This class addresses the obstacles that Mindfulness practitioners find in their practice and methods for overcoming them. The Five Hindrances — known as sensory desire, anger & aversion, restlessness & worry, sloth & torpor and doubt — refer to the key mental states that stir up our body and mind in ways that can lead to emotional or behavioral difficulties. Here we take time to encounter each of them as a way of giving ourselves some biofeedback along our path towards self-mastery. This course is designed for people who are already familiar with the basics of Mindfulness Meditation.
